1.
Integrated Processors:
The processor (cpu) in all
iBooks, PowerBook G4s, eMacs and iMacs*
is an integral part of the computer's motherboard.
If the processor goes bad in any of these
computers you must repair or replace its motherboard.
It is not possible to upgrade the processor.**
The links in the OPTIONS pulldown menu for any of
these computers will take you to their respective
motherboard page.
2.
Replacement Processors:
The processor in all PowerMac
G5s, PowerMac G4s, PowerMac G3s, PowerBook G3s, and
iMac G3s (with TrayLoading CD) is mounted on a separate,
and removable, board.
A bad processor in any of these computers
can be replaced with an Apple part.
The links in the OPTIONS pulldown menu for any of
these computers will take you to the page listing
available Apple replacement parts.
3.
Accelerator Cards:
Since the processor in PowerMac
G5s, PowerMac G4s, PowerMac G3s, PowerBook G3s, and
iMac G3s (with TrayLoading CD) is removable, third
party manufacturers have developed Accelerator Cards
(processor
upgrades) for many of
these computers.
Accelerator Cards provide older models
with a serious performance boost and are often an
effective and economical alternative to simply replacing
a defective processor with just another Apple part.
Naturally, the processor doesn't need
to be defective to merit replacement. Accelerator
Cards are designed to give your older Mac a new lease
on life!
The links in the OPTIONS pulldown menu to available
accelerator cards for these computers are listed by
manufacturer.

EXCEPTIONS:
*
iMac G3s with a Tray-Loading CD (233MHz, 266MHz and
333MHz) have a removable processor card.
**
FastMac offers a motherboard modification (to
G4) for most iMac G3s with Slot-Loading CD/DVD.
